The Current American Flag Design Came from a High School Project

Let’s take a little trip back in time to the year 1958. Imagine yourself sitting in a classroom where your teacher has just assigned you an open-ended project illustrating your interest in American history. What would you create?

This was the exact scenario that Robert Heft was in when he saw an opportunity to create something special. Robert Heft is credited for the design of the 50-star United States flag that we recognize today, and he did it for a project in high school. When he turned in his flag design he was sure to get an A for his grade, right? Not exactly.
