Happy Birthday Louisiana! The state has now been part of the union for 200 years.
200 years ago today, April 30th, 1812 Louisiana was admitted into the Union. Before Louisiana became the 18th state, it was part of the Territory of Orleans.
The Louisiana state flag displays the state bird, the Eastern Brown Pelican, on a blue background. The bird is also part of the official state seal. The flag also includes Louisiana’s motto, “Union, Justice & Confidence,” beneath the pelican. The flag originated from an design created during the 1800s, but was officially adopted by the state in 1912. This makes the flag 100 years old.
Today, Louisiana is the 25th most populous and the 31st most extensive state. Louisiana’s capital is Baton Rouge. The largest city is the famous New Orleans. The city of New Orleans is also often referred to as the most unique city in America. Do you agree with that nickname?
