High School Students Help Remove Flags from Veterans’ Graves

Students find a new way to honor those who sacrificed to protect this country

Around 100 Johnson City High School students help remove flags and gathered to show respect for passed away veterans who made the ultimate sacrifice for their county and community. It took the group about an hour to remove 4,000 American flags from the grave sites of veterans. The flags must be taken inside to prevent any further weather damage over the winter. This annual responsibility usually takes the American Legion Post 758 three weeks to complete.

One JC athletic trainer praised the event and called it a great way for the kids to learn something about their community history. Students from all clubs and backgrounds came to participate and offer their services. One student Sarah Nezelek, had the pleasure of removing flags from two of her grandparents who were stationed in Germany during World War II. She called it a “very important and touching experience.”

School organizers hope to extend the partnership between the cemetery, local veterans, and the school far into the future. The principal of the high school even made the early morning trip out to the cemetery and called the event a great civics lesson. A Legion member said the gesture means a lot to the veterans, not only logistically, but also as a sign of respect.
