10 destinations to experience a Winter Olympic experience of your own
It’s an exciting time with the Olympics right around the corner. I was doing some reading and came across an article describing the 10 best destinations in North America for aspiring Winter Olympians eager to up their game. It was interesting to learn about the history of these locations and their close ties to the Winter Games. After learning of these iconic spots I wanted to find the flag that represents each of these states and provinces.

1. Lake Placid, New York
Home to the Winter Olympic Games in 1932 and 1980, Lake Placid is a picturesque village tucked away in New York’s Adirondack Mountains. When you arrive be sure to make your first stop the Lake Placid Olympic Museum for a history reminder of some of the best Olympic moments and artifacts and footage from the 1980 “Miracle on Ice” hockey match between the United States and the Soviet Union.
2. Calgary, Alberta
It’s no surprise that Calgary finds itself on the list, being the first Canadian city to host the Winter Olympics. This year will mark the 30th anniversary of the Games in Calgary and will have five Olympic and four Paralympic athletes competing in this year’s Winter Games. If you like speed the Olympic Oval in downtown Calgary is the spot for you. Home to the world’s fastest ice this is a must stop for the inner speed skater in you.
3. Whistler, British Columbia
If you’re looking for a ski experience that you will never forget Four Seasons Whistler and Whistler Blackcomb is the place for you. Both offer private ski and snowboard lessons from multiple Winter Olympians. If bobsled is more your thing make your way to the fastest sliding track in the world at Whistler Sliding Centre.
4. Steamboat Springs, Colorado
Steamboat Springs, Colorado also known as Ski Town, USA is a hot bed for Olympic Athletes being home to the largest natural ski jumping complex in North America at Howelsen Hill Ski Area.
5. Crested Butte, Colorado
If you are looking to brush on your slalom “Wednesdays with Wendy” at Crested Butte Mountain resort is the Olympic experience you. Former downhill and slalom Olympian Wendy Fisher will be giving lessons throughout the 2017-18 season. She leads clinics and private lessons for guest skiers of all abilities.
6. Park City, Utah
In Park City, book a stay at the St. Regis Deer Valley, which recently partnered with the Utah Olympic Legacy Foundation to create a fan experience like non-other. Get a chance to interact and listen to a pair of bobsledding silver medalists tell their stories, then take to the track at speeds up to 70 mph.
7. Northstar (Truckee), California
Welcome to Shaun White’s home mountain. The Northstar California Resort, which boasts multiple award-winning terrain parks and pipes. There’s even a massive 22-foot superpipe at Northstar designed by White himself.
Vermont turns out more Winter Olympians per capita than any other state. Stowe, for one, is home to numerous amateur ski clubs that have bred world-class athletes. Both Stowe Mountain Resort and nearby Smugglers’ Notch Resort have served as training grounds for many winter athletes. Both reports offer a variety of winter sports, like cross country skiing, ice skating, downhill skiing and snowboarding.
At Squaw Valley Alpine Meadows, you have your choice of five official training sites for the US Ski and Snowboard Team. Want to compete for a medal? Test your skills on the NASATAR race course every weekend for a chance at the gold.
The name doesn’t disappoint. Mammoth Mountain Ski Area has turned out many Winter Olympians over the years. With ski seasons that can extend to July Mammoth Mountain Ski Area is home to some of the best and reliable snow conditions available. No matter what your ability Mammoth Mountain offers loads of developmental classes and clinics that will have you well on your way to Olympic stardom.
