It’s a Bird… It’s a Plane… It’s Flag Man!
His name is Colin Campbell he is one of the most notable patriots in the Greater Lansing area… attracting waves, smiles, and honks from those who pass by. He is a Marine Corps Vietnam vet, and has been walking Marsh Road since around 1987. He is a GM retiree who also worked as a Haslett school crossing guard for six years after he retired.
When Operation Desert Storm began in 1991, he started waving a flag as he walked. Then, after the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, he started counting cars that honked or motorists who waved. To date, it’s more than a million, though it’s slowed down.
Campbell walks along Marsh Road in Haslett every day with an American Flag in hand, and pup by his side, and he’s been doing it for the last 30-years.
Campbell’s loyal followers created a Facebook page in his honor.
That page, is liked by more than 8-thousand locals in the community.
If you are curious as to why you haven’t seen the flag man for a while it’s because he is laid up with a bad hip. He hopes to get out on the road after he recovers from an upcoming hip replacement surgery.
He’s 70 and arthritis has been bothering him. He fell down a few times this winter.
He misses his walks and interactions with motorists. So does Jayda, his dog.
