What do the Olympic Rings symbolize? History behind the iconic Olympic rings and flag

The Olympic rings are an iconic symbol known throughout the world. They are a grand symbol that emerge every two years for the winter and summer games. Do you know where the symbol and Olympic flag design come from?

The Olympic Games symbol is composed of five interlocking rings – one blue, yellow, black, green, and red. They always appear on a white field, like the official Olympic Flag.

This ring symbol was originally created by Baron Pierre de Coubertin in 1912. He was also a co-founder of the Olympic Games. He chose those specific six (including white) colors because at the time those colors appeared on the country flags of the nations that competed in the games.

In Pierre de Coubertin’s words, “The Olympic flag… has a white background, with five interlaced rings in the centre: blue, yellow, black, green and red… This design is symbolic; it represents the five inhabited continents of the world, united by Olympism, while the six colors are those that appear on all the national flags of the world at the present time.”

In 1914 the Olympic Games were put on hold due to World War I, so the official Olympic flag did not make its debut until the 1920 VII Games in Antwerp, Belgium. After that the flag and Olympic rings popularity quickly spread.
