Is it time to buy a new flag? Signs your flag is ready to be taken down and retired.
Many schools, restaurants, hotels, car dealerships, and other miscellaneous establishments fly American flags. You might even fly a flag or two outside your home! Displaying Old Glory is an excellent way to show your patriotism and USA pride, especially on certain holidays and half-staff alerts.
However, several people encounter issues when it comes to deciding whether it is time to hoist a brand new flag or keep the current one flying. The US Flag Code says that when a flag becomes “unserviceable” and unable to properly represent our country, it should be retired in a respectful and dignified manner.
But what exactly does “unserviceable” mean? When is it time to buy a new flag? If you have these questions, you are not alone!
There are several signs that your flag may be ready for retirement:
- The colors are faded and have lost their original vibrancy
- The flag has several holes and/or tears beyond repair
- The edges have started to fray
- There are stains that cannot be removed
If any of these conditions apply, it is time to dispose of your American flag and proudly raise a new one. The US Flag Code also stipulates how to properly retire your flag. For more details, check out this article on Proper Flag Disposal.
However to keep your flag flying a little longer, you can repair your flag if it does get a small hole or tear. Sewing small holes or trimming frayed edges is allowed.
But my flag has a small stain, what can I do? If you find your flag has a stain, you can gently hand-wash it. If that does not work, you can also try dry cleaning it. But if that stain is too large or set-in, it may be time to buy a new one.
