The history of the Florida state flag dates back to 1869. Between 1869 and 1900 the original flag of Florida was used. This flag offered a pure white background with the seal of the state in its center. It the 1890’s that Governor Francis P. Fleming petitioned to add the crimson red cross to represent the Confederate States of America. He also felt this would eliminate the flags current resemblance of a surrender flag. After the flag was changed and accepted in the early 1900’s many people commented on the Florida state flag’s resemblance to the Alabama flag due to the red cross. The Florida flag as we know it today is a pure white field with a crimson "X" running diagonally across it. In the center of the flag is the Florida State Seal which includes a Native American woman with flowers, a steamboat, a palm tree, and the shining sun.
