The Ohio State Flag was adopted in 1902 after the design was created by John Eisemann. Unique in its shape amongst fellow state flags of the Union, it’s distinguished as a pennant, properly a swallowtail design. The Ohio State Flag is uncomplicated in design, yet complete in its imagery. The union of the Ohio State Flag is enclosed with seventeen white stars in a large blue triangle. Those that are grouped around the circle represent the original thirteen colonies. The four stars found at the apex of the triangle combine with the stars of the original thirteen colonies to total seventeen; indicating Ohio as the seventeenth state to enter the Union. The three red and two white horizontal stripes with the blue field resemble the Stars and Stripes of the US Flag. The Ohio flag features a blue field representing Ohio's hills and valleys. The stripes represent the roads and waterways of the state of Ohio. The white circle with a red center forms the "O" in Ohio, and can also be related to Ohio State’s nickname, the "Buckeye State."
