The South Dakota state flag was officially approved in 1963, featuring the State Seal of South Dakota centered on a sky blue field surrounded by the rays of the sun. Encircling the seal and the sun are the words, "South Dakota" and "The Mount Rushmore State". Enclosed in the state seal are pictures of a farmer plowing fields alongside a river, forests, mountains, and a steamboat.
Senator Ernest May and Doane Robinson, the Secretary of the State Historical Society designed South Dakota’s original flag in 1909. The flag displayed a figure of the sun on the front and the state's seal on the back. In 1963, the son of Doane Robinson, Will Robinson, redesigned South Dakota’s state seal. The sun's rays were both placed on the front of the flag. In 1992 the old motto, "The Sunshine State," was changed to "The Mount Rushmore State" when it too closely resembled the nickname of another state, Florida
