The history of the Tennessee state flag can be traced back to a design done by LeRoy Reeves and its official adoption in April of 1905. The colors of the flag are the same as the American flag and they each offer separate symbolization. The blue offers the love that Tennesseans have for their state, the red refers to Tennessean’s loyalty to their country through times of war and peace, and the white, like many other states, refers to purity. The background of the flag is primarily red with one small stripe of blue outlined in white on the far right side. In the center of the red section is a blue circle outlined in white that encases three large white stars. These stars represent the three divisions of the state in reference to the contrasting geographical divisions which include: the Great Smokey Mountains, the Cumberland Plateau, and the narrow valleys and forested hills.
