The history of the Virginia state flag is somewhat of a mystery. It is known that the official flag was adopted in 1861, but the true story behind its creation is not fully documented. Virginia’s flag has a dark blue field and in its center a white circle. In this circle is the state’s name and motto "Sic Semper Tyrannis." This motto can be translated from latin to "Thus always to tyrants." The flag shows the goddess of virtue and a tyrant. The flag shows the goddess defeating the tyrant as he lay on the ground clutching a whip. The goddess is intended to symbolize Virginia and the tyrant Britain. The flag also offers a silk white fringe on the edge furthest from its staff.
